Your Website and the No1 Spot - Part Two
Proven and Controversial Ways to Improve Web Traffic :
HTML Files
Too many graphics will make your site slow to download and be
unfavourable with the search engines. This is because graphics
are commonly saved under jpeg files. Search engines recognise
key words within HTML not jpeg files. Therefore web sites that
include lots of HTML have lots of key words that can be used.
Within your text use relevant repetitive words and phrases, these
can then be used as key words and help when searched. A popular
form of this keyword loading is the to have a long list of words
the same colour as the background, search engines have cottoned
on to this practice and if you are discovered being banned from
that search engine could be a real possibility.
Register
Choose which search engines you register your web site with carefully.
Probably the single most import site to register with is the Open
Directory Project at www.dmoz.org
Swapping Links
This involves swapping links with other sites. It is one of the
oldest ways to increase your web site traffic and it still works,
and with the way some search engines work very important. To do
this add a link to the other site from your site, then approach
them, suggesting that they link back. Link only to quality sites
relating to your topic.
Avoid the "free for all" link farms as search engines
frown on these, and the use of them could find your site with
a ban, another "trick" to avoid is putting your website
into hundreds of guest books, as again this can result in a ban.
Pop Ups and Pop Unders
Pop ups are browser windows that appear automatically when a
user arrives at or leaves a web site. Pop Ups can be annoying
to web surfers, although they can also be a good way of increasing
web site traffic. Many sites offer a Pop Up Exchange service,
where in return for showing other sites Pop Ups, your Pop Up is
shown on their sites they are generally free to join. Be aware
that many people now install pop up stopping software.
A popular form of the Pop Up is a Pop Under window, usually being
activated when a site is visited, the pop under stays behind the
current browser, not distracting the user. Once a browser is closed
down the pop under would be revealed.
